I was at a dead-end job and had a micro manager who I did not like very much.  I was determined to do something with my life and make much more money than I ever dreamed of.  I wanted a six-figure salary and did not want to deal with my manager on a daily basis.

I was in the doctor’s office one day and I saw a woman who was dressed very professionally and was speaking with the doctor behind the counter.  I was curious about what type of job she had, so I asked her when she came out of the office.  She said she was a pharmaceutical sales representative and was calling on the doctor and leaving some samples.  She went on to tell me that she loved her job as a pharmaceutical sales representative and that she could go weeks without having to see her manager.  She went on to say how she enjoyed the freedom of making her own schedule, the company car, free gas, and exotic pharmaceutical sales training trips.

I must admit that 13 years ago it was really difficult for me to land one of these pharmaceutical sales jobs.  I submitted my resume to every company I could think of with months of rejection and disappointment.  I talked to people I knew, tried to network but could not get an interview.  I rewrote my resume many times after reading many books on resume writing and getting feedback from people in the pharmaceutical sales industry and eventually after 9 months I was able to land a pharmaceutical sales interview.

I finally had a polished resume that blew people away.  Every hiring manager that I met was so impressed with my resume and everyone asked if it was professionally written.  Once I was done with the resume, I even impressed myself and would say, “I really do look great on my resume.  Who wouldn’t want to hire me for a pharmaceutical rep position?”

There really is a technique and art to writing a pharmaceutical sales resume and I finally found it!  My pharmaceutical sales resume was perfect!

I had my first pharmaceutical sales interview and was a nervous wreck.  I had no idea what to expect.  I thought this would be a piece of cake.  I thought my outgoing personality and interpersonal skills would shine and pull me through.  

Not the case!

I didn’t have a clue on how to answer these ridiculously tough pharmaceutical sales interview questions.  I didn’t have a strategy on what to say and how to persuade the hiring manager to hire me.  I stumbled on questions.  I was losing confidence.  That interview came and went and the hiring manager never called me back.

I was so disappointed!

I talked to other pharmaceutical sales representatives and found out what they did to land their pharmaceutical sales jobs  I hired interview coaches to teach me about what to expect in an interview for a pharmaceutical sales representative.  I read every book I could get my hands on about how to persuade people and how to tell people what they wanted to hear.  I read about behavioral interviewing techniques and learned how to actually sell something with a needs-based selling style.

After many more months of interviewing for pharmaceutical sales jobs, I thought I gave the hiring manager everything they wanted.  I answered all their questions perfectly but they still wouldn’t offer me a pharmaceutical sales job!

After another 4 months of reading, studying, practicing, and interviewing, I finally figured out the secret that I was missing!

I was missing some really key principles and techniques of how to get a pharmaceutical sales hiring manager to hire me.  Once I learned these principles and techniques, it was like magic.  It was so easy to land a pharmaceutical sales interview and it became so easy to win the pharmaceutical sales interview.

I knew what to say, how to say it, and knew how to take control of the pharmaceutical sales interview and ask for the job!  I could sell the hiring manager anything.  Most importantly, I knew how to sell myself!

This was no easy journey.  This was really hard for me.  I had to convince a complete stranger to trust what I was saying, believe that I knew know how to sell, and that I was the right person for their pharmaceutical sales job.

It took me a long time to find a pharmaceutical sales job and start my new career as a pharmaceutical sales representative.  Looking back, it was well worth the effort and it allowed me to have and do things that I would have never dreamed possible!
